Every student in the ninth grade encounters questions such as how to plot root 2, how to represent root 2, or how to locate root 2 on the number line. Here is the step-by-step method to actually locate 2 on the number line.

How to plot root 2 (2)

We know that 2 is an irrational number. We cannot plot 2 directly on the number line. We use Pythagoras Theorem to find length equal to 2 on the number line as shown in the picture below.

Step 1

We first draw a number line.

Step 2

We draw a line segment AB of length 1 unit starting from zero. One unit may be equal to 1cm, 1m or 1inch

Step 3

We draw a line segment BC of length 1 unit perpendicular to the line segment AB.

Step 4

We join AC. AC = 2

Step 5

Taking AC as radius, we draw an arc to intersect at a point on the number line

Clearly, D is the location of 2. Hence, we have plotted 2 on the number line.
